The US has been moving military assets towards Iran since December, I cannot imagine that the imminent attack was a surprise to anyone and that it was not authorized. You cannot move 2 carriers strike groups and ferry hundreds of aircraft across the globe without cooperation between services.

Like you said, this slow moving Shahed drone being able to reach a US base across the sea is very telling. I would not have expected this to be possible.

Now watch carefully because if some retaliatory attacks were to happen in the USA, by Iranians backed attackers or US agents posing as Iranians, it could be a reason for Trump to impose the state of emergency that he was warning about and cancel the midterms.

And maybe the hope that Iran (or US agents posing as Iranian backed) will do some attacks on US soil so they can declare state of emergency and cancel the midterms.
