Spoken lines, animations and visual design do so much more for a character than an entire book of Lore™️ could ever do

No you’re absolutely right. Pages of Lore aren’t required for a character to have personality, which isn’t to say that lore is bad but I do think it should be an optional extra for if you’re into that. A character is much more appealing if you can get a sense of their personality purely from THEM

Exactlyyy. I feel like people were willing to engage with and invest in TF2 comics and such BECAUSE they’d already been drawn in by the charm of the characters in-game. Without that initial draw, there’s much less interest

Even as someone who’s willing to read lore though, there’s a difference between written lore and spoken lines & unique animations actually coming from the character as you play them. The latter has a surprisingly strong effect for making a character have personality

Not unique to valve obviously (off the top of my head Payday and Guilty Gear are two other series that I think benefit from having unique character interactions and I’m sure there are plenty more), but they seem to have writers that understand the concept which is good. Shame I am allergic to moba 😔

I’m not willing to give valve much credit for literally anything but I will say at least they understand how much character interactions add to a game. Worked in L4D and works in Deadlock. By comparison you have stuff like DBD where nobody talks so the survivors have no discernible personality

Definitely don’t be discouraged by similar works! There were many RPGs before Undertale, there are many horror games that aren’t Silent Hill, but these works still captivate people because of their own unique flavour. As long as you create with sincerity and passion, someone will appreciate it

When Terry Pratchett died it struck me that our door to the world inside his mind was forever closed. Other people could write Discworld books of course, but they would be their own interpretation - not bad but inherently different. I realised each human mind is a unique, limited resource
