A reminder that β€˜knowing’ is not binary, it's not an on/off thing. We move through stages; hearing, recognising, recalling, mastering, before knowledge becomes truly usable. This example of of children's different phrases of 'knowing' words from Beck, McKeown, and Kucan is so useful

Very much this. Bear in mind that independent schools cite β€˜dyslexia’ and β€˜special needs’ as justification for 25% of their students having exam access arrangements. Even the teachers know it’s gamed.

A recent article claimed that the Science of Learning and Direct Instruction is "neoliberal β€˜dogma’ that is working to de-skill the teaching profession". This is my response to that ⬇️ carlhendrick.substack.com/p/defending-...

So yes, autonomy is important, but it's much less important imo than learning and mastering a set series of basic tools and skills, which requires directive and authoritative feedback and training.

Six decades later, Star Trek may still be the only franchise based on the ideas that diversity is strength, justice is the measure of civilization, bounty is to be shared, peace is worth the price, and all these things can be achieved.

We need more shows that look ahead and find goodness.

Good morning. I recently created a starter pack called Mutual Aid for the Rebellion, which includes folks in immigration law, cultural historians, abortion access, and much more. It’s below, but following in a thread of other starter packs in kindβ€”wave to be added to mine:

We had a big push on this in my previous school, and you could see the increased engagement immediately.

I'm still investigating, but it's quite quickly popping up to the top of my priority list in my new place.

It's such a small tweak for a really massive impact.

It seems like cybernetics. It's not necessarily true that trees need wind, but probably true they develop differently in environments with varying wind. Organism adapting to fit their environment. But, adaptation to stress in humans will have varying outputs, good or bad. Biology is complex.

Elem./Primary Schools: where students are across-the-board novices, parents need sig. support, and teachers first form and guide group social interactions, are mandated to monitor care gaps, and teach multiple foundational topics to mastery, daily. Absurd. See point 2 below. Give them their fish.

What can the science of learning do for teachers? It can help us overcome biases: how we *think* we learn and how we *actually* learn are often very different. This also applies to instruction: the approaches which might appear to work in the short term often do not lead to long term gains.

When we talk about the science of learning, we're talking about a subset of interrelated fields involving neuroscience, cognitive science and education psychology. Mayer's distinction between the 3 elements of learning, instruction and assessment in "educationally relevant settings" are very helpful
