1954 – 2015

Let us take a moment today to remember Anne and all her contributions to Coronation Street upon this 10th anniversary of her passing.

While in Manchester I created some new artwork to commemorate Anne, once again based on Deirdre Barlow’s iconic specs which I’d photographed at the #CorrieTour over on the soon-to-be mothballed Quay Street studio lot.

This was the day I met and became friends with Scotland’s biggest Corrie fan, Brian Altman. A sad day bringing the fandom together.

On Saturday May 30, 2015, I attended a public memorial service for Anne Kirkbride along with Anne’s family, friends, colleagues and fellow fans at Manchester Cathedral.

I quickly created a new piece of artwork - Deirdre Barlow’s specs with a tear dropping onto the Coronation St. sign. I shared the image on Twitter and Instagram and it went viral. It wasn’t the best drawing - but it summed up our feelings as #Corrie fans. 😢

I never got to share the artwork that night as ITV made an announcement at the end of the episode that shocked me and every other viewer. The announcer shared the sad news that Anne Kirkbride - Coronation Street’s Deirdre Barlow - had passed away at the age of 60 years old.

During the episode I worked on a witty piece of artwork mashing up the crashed minibus with the scene from Jurassic Park where the Tyrannosaurus rex pushes a car over a cliff.

The staff of Underworld were caught up in the incident as they headed off on a factory outing. The scenes aired on ITV on Monday January 19, 2015. A cold frosty night when over 8 million tuned in to watch.

At the beginning of 2015, Coronation Street was running a big storyline about a minibus crash. Fans speculated who would survive the imminent disaster.

Today is the 10th anniversary of the passing of Anne Kirkbride, known to millions of TV viewers as Coronation Street’s Deirdre Barlow.
