The Government of Alberta must scrap its plans to shield AIMCo from accountability, says the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). The Alberta Investment Management Company (AIMCo) faces a $1.3 billion suit as a result of the crown corporation’s negligence when implementing its VOLTS trading strategy, which caused $2 billion in losses to Alberta public sector pension plans. The government’s new Bill 12, the Financial Statutes Amendment Act, would shield AIMCo from the legal consequences of its actions. AIMCo is the sole pension plan manager for hundreds of thousands of Albertans, including AUPE members who belong to the LAPP and Public Service Pension Plan (PSPP). “AIMCo must answer for their disastrous decisions,” says AUPE Vice-President Darren Graham. “This is not government money. This is the pension plan members’ money, our deferred wages. The government must stop running cover for AIMCo and start representing the best interests of Albertans.” Pension plan members previously had a choice between AIMCo and other plan managers, but the provincial government took that choice away in 2019 with Bill 22. “If we are forced to accept AIMCo as our pension manager, we demand transparency and accountability,” says Graham. AUPE is western Canada’s largest union, standing over 100,000 members strong.
