Got a personalized rejection on a full from a big time editor with lots of great feedback! Making a plan for revisions and feeling equal parts accomplished and defeated. #amquerying #kidlit

Query update: AugustΒ 2025 While I was relaxing on vacation, my inbox was busier than ever. Here are my current stats: Total queries sent: 82 queries sent (4 editors, 78 agents)Rejections/no reply: 60 (including one personalized!)Requests: 5 Eight form rejections landed in my inbox within days of each other. Normally I pour myself a glass of wine for each one, but that seemed a bit excessive, even for summer break.

I hope this is just another trend that will subside after the effects of the pandemic have waned a bit. My daughter (4th grade) says she's sick of graphic novels now and wants to read more "real" books. She really likes novels in verse now.

I think there's definitely still an audience for longer books -- lots of kids still gobble up Harry Potter, and those are super long! It's good to have a mix of short and long books for this age group. That being said, I'm aiming the word count for my next book around 40k.

I met some editors from Delacorte at the SCBWI conference in NY, and we posed this question. They didn't seem too fazed by high word counts in MG (70K for fantasy was okay with them)..but the agent I later met with and asked the same question was definitely wanting work in the 35-55 range.

Just finished this delightful novel, What Fell from the Sky by @adriannacuevas.bsky.social! Fascinating history about a military exercise in the 1950s, and of course fun speculation about a lost little alien and her family. Highly recommend! #kidlit #writingcommunity #bookreview

Taking Another Plunge Into the QueryΒ Trenches Whew. Here we go again. I took a good long break from querying, just about a full year. In that time, I've revised with a mentor, cut 11,000 words, and revamped my query letter. I've also learned a lot more about the industry and made several connections with agents and editors through conferences. I'm hopeful these personal connections will give me a leg up.

Submitting Short Fiction Last year I started submitting my short fiction to literary magazines. Like the laborious task of querying a novel, this too involves patience, persistence, and perseverance. Oh, and rejections. Lots of rejections. Famously, this is how Stephen King got his start. He impaled his hundreds of rejection letters on a nail on his wall. I display mine in a far less dramatic and tactile way: on an Excel spreadsheet.
