Trump Lied to Cynthia, Paul, and Olivia State of the Union Claims of Help for Workers and Seniors Were False

Thanks to @epi.org for their terrific research that exposed the ways these laws don’t help the workers and seniors who we see facing eviction.

Cynthia works for tips.
Paul works gig jobs.
Olivia lives on Social Security.

Trump said his policies help people like them. The reality says otherwise.

ICE plans to spend $38.3 billion turning warehouses into detention centers ICE plans to spend $38.3 billion converting warehouses into detention centers, according to planning documents, more than the annual budgets of 22 states.

Imagine if even a fraction of what this administration plans to spend on cages went toward housing people.

Commentary: Trump's order on homelessness gets it all wrong, and here's why There are no simple answers for homelessness β€” or addiction or mental illness β€” but Trump's bluster is no substitute for desperately needed resources.

People are homeless primarily because they can't afford housing. We know how to solve homelessness, but with deep cuts...we’re moving in the wrong direction, says BHHI Director Dr. Margot Kushel. "Taking a chainsaw to the healthcare safety net...will only add to the homeless count."

There is essentially NO evidence that rent control discourages construction. No study-NONE-has shown that rent control reduces housing supply. No study has found a causal link between rent control & reduction in construction. Studies that look at repeal of rent control don't find more construction.

Time to Focus on Economic Rights Since the November, 2024 election, I have talked with dozens of people facing eviction or enduring unsafe and unhealthy rental housing conditions.

New newsletter post highlights the important work of @markpaulecon.bsky.social on building economic rights. Free speech does not put food on the table for a family of five. The right to vote is not building a roof over the heads of our clients headed to sleep in shelters, cars, or the streets.
