Wastewater Surveillance Testing community wastewater provides information about the health of a community.

This is our chance to let BC know:

👉 wastewater testing is essential 👉 we don’t want any more cut
👉 we want them to improve the program!

The survey only takes a few minutes & is anonymous.

Screencap from the BCCDC wastewater dashboard with a notice stating, report updated on September 18, 2025. Data is presented up to the reporting period of epi week 37 (September 7 - 13, 2025). The wastewater surveillance program has implemented some new changes starting September 11, 2025: 1) the number of wastewater treatment plants tested has been changed to eight provincewide, as opposed to previously 12 wastewater treatment plants. 2) they will now be one sample collected per wastewater treatment plant per week, as opposed to previously three samples per treatment plant per week. 3) sequencing of wastewater samples will be changed from weekly to every two weeks.

Clinical data (like no. of hospitalizations & deaths) are lagging indicators, making wastewater essential. Unfortunately, BC drastically cut their testing program in Sept 2025 - they stopped testing 4 treatment plants, and reduced sampling to once a week & sequencing to once every 2 weeks.

Good news - WorkSafeBC has announced that when the newest edition of CSA standard Z94.4 comes out, they’ll review it for future updates to BC’s workplace safety regulations.

This means we’re one step closer to getting up-to-date rules about workplace N95 use and airborne transmission into BC law!

Instead of masks in healthcare, BC has:

🏥 more ER closures
🚨 expert warnings about the “worst kind of flu season”, due to mismatch of vaccine & emerging strain
🦠 a global surge of COVID-19
🐓 H5N1 outbreaks
☣️ BC measles exposures + loss of Canada’s measles elimination status

ACTION ALERT 📣 BC is falling behind in protecting patients & healthcare workers. As we enter fall/winter, Newfoundland, Labrador, PEI, major Quebec & Ontario hospitals & more have already restored mask requirements in healthcare - yet so far, BC has failed to take action.

A group of global experts in medicine, public health, law, and industrial hygiene have come together to urge the World Health Organization to finally recognize and recommend true respiratory protection — N95/FFP2-3 respirators — for all healthcare settings.

Surgical masks are not PPE.

Graphic showing Wastewater Surveillance sample data for respiratory viruses (SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, influenza B and RSV). Wastewater surveillance works by quantifying the amount of virus shed by infected people into the community’s wastewater system(s). While these measurements by themselves cannot tell us how many people are infected, tracking changes in these measurements over time can give us a complementary sense of circulation of respiratory viruses. Report updated on October 9th, 2025. Data is presented up to the reporting period of epi week 40 (September 28-October 4, 2025). Influenza A, B and RSV low in all regions, and SARS-CoV-2 moderate/high in Northern, Interior and Coastal regions, high on the Island and in the Fraser region, and trending upwards in Fraser and Northern regions. There are multiple abundant lineages (XFG.2, XFG.10, and NB.1.8.1.)

Wastewater testing in BC has recently decreased in frequency, and several wastewater plants have stopped testing entirely, which is likely to result in less accurate data.
