This really is what it boils down to! US elections are contrarian affairs! They're effectively referendums on the state of the economy.

one of the most persistent myths in punditry is that you can pull a coherent rationale out of the american voter. swing voters are, by and large, doing a surface level assessment of their current situation and giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

The prime examples of this I can point to are the US interventions in Guatemala and Chile. Rather than engaging in more direct forms of warfare, the US opted for economic and covert methods to undermine the democratic regimes in those countries.

This actually connects to the same critique I have of liberal Democratic Peace theory. While Ill concede that liberal democracies or similar regimes are less likely to go to war directly, this hasn't stopped conflict and intervention...rather it changes form.

Which kinda connects with what I'm saying, in that the nature of violence has changed, resulting in less violent deaths (depending on how you define that), but the violence itself still exists, albeit in other forms.
