I definitely think you should analyse why people talk about one or the other, and there are clear financial incentives for AI leaders to talk more about the catastrophic risks. I just don't think it means they should be ignored, as is often the suggestion from a big chunk of people (not you!).

A not insignificant proportion of the people who (understandably!) prioritise the current, near-term risks and harms, also dismiss the potential more catastrophic ones based, it often seems, on the fact they don't like the people talking about them, rather than the actual prospect of them happening.

Like, I don't think nuclear weapons are something we should pretend don't exist just cos Putin regularly discusses them dishonestly to get leverage.

Ha, well given I work for a non profit journalism outlet funded by Coefficient Giving, may be surprising that I'm fine with looking at things like that sceptically! Thing that bugs me is those dismissing the pos catastrophic risks without actually looking at them.

Not saying that it isn't seen as a useful distraction from those issues, and I don't think it should distract from them (though the energy/water use stuff is more complicated than many make out) but doesn't mean they aren't potentially problems!

It has posted the video but has failed to report on what it shows: it shows the US govt account is untrue

I'm seeing people mistakenly claim the gun photo was posted before today, but its just how Google sometimes dates images based on the original date of the thread its posted in, not when it was posted. The photo was posted an hour ago in this 5 day old thread

i suppose it makes sense but it is completely demoralizing that we live in a moment where there is more video/photographic evidence (often from multiple angles) than ever before and also a durable system in place for propagandists to gaslight or convince others into not believing their eyes
