NBC wants you to trust its coverage of the East Wing demolition even though NBC's parent company helped pay for the destruction.

Office of the President
Dear Dartmouth community,

As many of you know, Dartmouth was one of nine universities asked by the White House to give feedback by Oct. 20 on a draft of its β€œCompact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.”

I am deeply committed to Dartmouth’s academic mission and values and will always defend our fierce independence.

You have often heard me say that higher education is not perfect and that we can do better. At the same time, we will never compromise our academic freedom and our ability to govern ourselves.

Best,
Sian Leah Beilock
President

It appears that my employer, Dartmouth, one of the Trump 9, has said no to the compact. All the better given that our president is cited within it. But she’s saying no. Count the small victories when they come.

Sotomayor rebukes calls to β€˜criminalize free speech’ in apparent swipe at Pam Bondi The justice, in public remarks, didn’t name the attorney general, who has come under fire for comments to target people over β€œhate speech.”

Justice Sonia Sotomayor appeared to rebuke calls to target β€œhate speech” in an apparent swipe at Attorney General Pam Bondi.

β€œEvery time I listen to a lawyer-trained representative saying we should criminalize free speech in some way, I think to myself, that law school failed,” said Sotomayor.

Kavanaugh: Under this Court's precedents, not to mention common sense, those circumstances taken together can constitute at least reasonable suspicion of illegal presence in the United States. Importantly, reasonable suspicion means only that immigration officers may briefly stop the individual and inquire about immigration status. If the person is a U.S. citizen or otherwise lawfully in the United States, that individual will be free to go after the brief encounter. Only if the person is illegally in the United States may the stop lead to further immigration proceedings.

Among myriad problems with this ruling, can we pause to appreciate the childlike naΓ―vetΓ© exhibited by Cavanaugh on the barely-worth-mentioning inconvenience of being detained and interogated by ICE? We are approaching Plessy levels of obtuseness, or feigned obtuseness.

SCOTUS thought they could ride the tiger and get what they wanted ideologically. In exchange, they would give him everything he wanted except the Fed. Just leave the Fed alone and you can ignore all federal law. But it ended the same way it has for everyone who tried to ride the tiger since 2016.

Opinion | What the University of Virginia Should Have Done The university should have stood up to the Justice Department.

β€œInstead of presenting facts and law, the board waved the white flag of surrender,” writes Timothy Heaphy, the former university counsel for the University of Virginia. The resignation of Jim Ryan, the university president, β€œis a victory for intimidation and fear over the rule of law.”
