I like capitals, decorative sculpture, and ornament. Soon you will too. Brought to you by demiliopics2.bsky.social and thousands of sculptors. Photos my own I've also begun a website: www.jamesdemilio.com

2/ The technique is discussed on this page (section on “drilling”) of an interesting website on tools and techniques in #Roman #sculpture. I don’t claim much expertise on these technical matters, so I’m happy to have something corrected or explained differently.

1/ If you’re interested in or puzzled by that “technical detail”, you can see it very clearly in the beard of the man in the 3rd (lower left) photo or the hair of the face on the left in the last (lower right) photo. Once you notice it, you’ll see it elsewhere in the grooves of the acanthus leaves.

Inside the Pisa Baptistery, late 12th century Corinthian-style capitals with masks in the abacus.
The last one with large carved out eyes and mouth looks like an ancient theatrical mask.
Small technical detail: you can spot some rows of unconnected drill holes on each.

Cotterstock church in Northants was founded in 1317 by John Gifford who spent most of the 1330s establishing it as a collegiate church, appropriation was authorised in 1340. Seemingly, wool played its part in the college's fortunes and these curious objects in the C15 porch are wool bales.

Four-sided capital with two alternating roles of large, simple, and stylized rectangular leaves. In the upper row, there is one at each corner with a figure seated on it and supporting the corners of the abacus. Between them, on the center of each face of the capital, an animal is carved in low relief on the exposed bell of the capital, above the lower leaves. Two are roosters, two are griffins. The feathers and wings are detailed with incisions and grooves.
