The difference in scale makes it impossible not to imagine how transformational it would be to prioritize conservation to nearly the same degree. Gives the same feeling as when comparing the meager amount we spend on bike and trail networks to the sums dedicated to arterial and freeway widening.

How it started:

How it's going:

"How fern (fun)! You can see this native water plant, Pacific mosquito fern, or duckweed fern (Azolla filiculoides), growing on the mudflats at Smith and Bybee Wetlands. Sporting fluffy green leaves, the plant has transformed from an orange red mat that covered parts of the lake in spring. This is the same plant!

Oh sorry! Forgot they do that

I'm mostly concerned about the additional VMT imparted by the cost and ease of its use, and the shift in infrastructure investment and development encouraged by that change. I'm not sure the city is up to managing that challenge, let alone the state.

The Mayor doesn't have that authorityβ the District Attorney does, and in May 2024, we elected a Republican to the position.

Creating a list of opportunity corridors might've been outside of the scope of the study though, idk. I like the look of the Beaverton-Clackamas corridor they outline as an example, from a network perspective. Surprised I haven't seen people talking about the study as there have been updates.

I haven't been tracking meetings at all the past couple months, but the draft Metro Regional Rail Futures Study was released, and it seems to not go into the idea at all because of highly limited capacity on the BNSF line.

I don't have a fully formed opinion on this, but even aside from deadheading, the low prices before the companies decide they have to start making money, and the network after full automation and build out, may lower the barrier to driving so much that it increases VMT by some significant amount.

Not to mention that this shifting distribution is due in large part to Measures 5 and 50β and I don't see the Portland Metro Chamber advocating for tax reform there.

He may just be who we need in this moment...
"take action β putting a stop to the endless debate β to move forward with Washington state and federal officials to build a new I-5 Columbia River Bridge."

Not that I have the equipment for this, but it'd be cool to go to some of the locations like this in the archive with a similar model of camera and lens, and replicate the pictures exactly.

Jose Huerta-Chuma was the individual targeted by DHS when the killing took place, not the person killed. Bad info.

I had to use Wayback to access the Get Moving 2020 funding map breakdown pdf last week as well. Probably some Metro backend issue or change with unintended consequences.

About one minute later, at roughly 11:32 am, Councilor Dan Ryan asked Morillo a clarifying question about whether people would be using the algorithmic price fixing software she was trying to ban if they owned 20 units or fewer. Morillo responded, and Ryan continued with his public statement at the meeting.
tbh I think the Mercury buried the lede, which is that an Oregonian comments section troll / real estate developer appears to be using Councilor Dan Ryan as a mouthpiece

This is a perfect example of why the public meetings law is so stupid. Serial communications among a quorum of councilors are illegal. But lobbyists can talk to as many councilors as they want about whatever they they want.

Isn't there basically no chance? I thought '22 was only close because there was a mildly Republican national environment, with a Betsy Johnson spoiler effect.

You absolutely do not have to hand it to Mark Meek. What's next? Coming out in favor of repealing the transportation package, for the sake of 'affordability'?

Mixed feelings about seeing our PBOT Director take part in a conference in Saudi Arabia... Was just talking the other day about how it's still an open wound that the Saudi gov't helped the driver who killed Fallon Smart with his car in 2016 escape justice while he was awaiting trial for her death.

Trimet did purchase the remainder of the ROW, and has talked about the investment preserving the corridor for future opportunitiesβ but it's classified in the HCT Strategy report as a "Vision Corridor" (needing "more work related to land use and development, ridership potential").

I don't know how and when they came into play for 82nd Ave, but as far as I'm aware, BAT lanes haven't been considered for TV Highway since the 2020 ballot measure. TV Highway is also still an ODOT road, and there's no room to spare in the (not yet existent) federal project funding, so idk.

In the 12 months preceding October, Seattle's light rail ridership beat Portland's, per 'metro area' capita, for the first time in history. Going forward, Seattle's lead will rapidly grow.
Maybe someone should design a ballot measure to make it a competition and do something about that!
