31.07.2025 23:04 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1If you have any evidence linking the orgs pushing age verification to the anti-trans stuff, I'd be super interested to see it.
29.07.2025 15:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've been reading a lot from proponents, and they don't seem to be coming from the same place. The anti trans stuff in the UK sucks, but I don't think it's being pushed by the same people. The dynamics elsewhere aren't the same as in the US, where the power of rw evangelicals is pretty unique.
29.07.2025 14:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0That's broadly true in the US re hard age verification identifiers for porn, but I don't think that's the case in the UK. Impact may be comparable though, perhaps in part b/c the US-based platforms have internalized the interests of the American proponents.

18.07.2025 12:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Just updated my @techpolicypress.bsky.social article on spyware to add the effective legal moves against FinFisher that were initiated by a complaint by NGOs including @netzpolitik.org, @rsf.org & @ecchr.bsky.social.
17.07.2025 20:46 β π 1 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Your underlying point may be right, but it's not accurate to say that the NIH says this. It's just one item in their vast library of medical literature from a range of sources. (When critiquing bad journalism, better to report with precision?)
17.07.2025 20:35 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0*take down/censor. (The NIH didn't write it, they just make lots of research available in their library. Original skeet here is bad.)
17.07.2025 20:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I thought the TikTok ban was an idiotic moral panic and a gross curtailment of expressive freedom, but Iβm at least as uncomfortable about a scenario where a platform with 170m US users exists entirely on the personal sufferance of Donald Trump (or any president).
18.06.2025 01:17 β π 409 π 80 π¬ 13 π 6My latest @techpolicypress.bsky.social article:
16.06.2025 12:52 β π 5 π 4 π¬ 0 π 0And then yesterday, this story came out. We'll be watching to see where it goes! www.wired.com/story/google...
11.06.2025 19:37 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0There were a couple of new pieces of information out last week about the TikTok ban (remember that?), so we've updated my @techpolicypress.bsky.social timeline. techpolicy.press/a-tiktok-ban...

15.05.2025 21:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Parallels with social media feed algorithms that deliberately promote/demote certain types of content vs. "unbiased" purely engagement-based ones - reminds me of a conversation I had with @iyerland.bsky.social a few years ago.

15.05.2025 18:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've been assuming that "device level" would really be OS level, meaning via the Google or Apple account (for Android and iOS devices), so that you can still have a shared device. Was that how you were thinking about it, @julietshen.bsky.social?

06.05.2025 12:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We should definitely give US politicians new names when they retire. But being America, the public should vote on them, rather than the monarch bestowing them.

08.04.2025 13:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In a dizzying year, the TikTok ban-or-sale law was passed, challenged, upheld, and halted. Now, as the platform's fate hinges on President Trump's dealmaking, Tim Bernard (@timbernard.me) reviews the twists and turns. A development could come this week, given an April 5 deadline for a deal:
