@mmasnick.bsky.social and @shuhbillskee.bsky.social might both enjoy this article reflecting on how popular culture seems to have recently forgotten to reflect the magic of technology

If you have any evidence linking the orgs pushing age verification to the anti-trans stuff, I'd be super interested to see it.

I've been reading a lot from proponents, and they don't seem to be coming from the same place. The anti trans stuff in the UK sucks, but I don't think it's being pushed by the same people. The dynamics elsewhere aren't the same as in the US, where the power of rw evangelicals is pretty unique.

That's broadly true in the US re hard age verification identifiers for porn, but I don't think that's the case in the UK. Impact may be comparable though, perhaps in part b/c the US-based platforms have internalized the interests of the American proponents.

Your underlying point may be right, but it's not accurate to say that the NIH says this. It's just one item in their vast library of medical literature from a range of sources. (When critiquing bad journalism, better to report with precision?)

*take down/censor. (The NIH didn't write it, they just make lots of research available in their library. Original skeet here is bad.)

I thought the TikTok ban was an idiotic moral panic and a gross curtailment of expressive freedom, but I’m at least as uncomfortable about a scenario where a platform with 170m US users exists entirely on the personal sufferance of Donald Trump (or any president).

There were a couple of new pieces of information out last week about the TikTok ban (remember that?), so we've updated my @techpolicypress.bsky.social timeline. techpolicy.press/a-tiktok-ban...

Parallels with social media feed algorithms that deliberately promote/demote certain types of content vs. "unbiased" purely engagement-based ones - reminds me of a conversation I had with @iyerland.bsky.social a few years ago.

I've been assuming that "device level" would really be OS level, meaning via the Google or Apple account (for Android and iOS devices), so that you can still have a shared device. Was that how you were thinking about it, @julietshen.bsky.social?

We should definitely give US politicians new names when they retire. But being America, the public should vote on them, rather than the monarch bestowing them.

In a dizzying year, the TikTok ban-or-sale law was passed, challenged, upheld, and halted. Now, as the platform's fate hinges on President Trump's dealmaking, Tim Bernard (@timbernard.me) reviews the twists and turns. A development could come this week, given an April 5 deadline for a deal:
