I just read a book in which the main character's hair color changes from one page to the next, eagles circle a dead body, the same word is repeated 20 times in a single paragraph, and there are typos all over the place.
Editors, man. We need them so badly. They do the lord's work.

Learning how to use grammar and punctuation to effectively communicate, to see them as tools I could intentionally wield, was empowering for me as someone who grew up working class and first gen. Remember when literacy was associated with liberation?

I'm nodding along to all this. Postprandial symptoms, check. Active in the Before Times, check. Deconditioning after lockdown, check. Then I got long COVID and PEM, so exercise seems impossible.
Naming the condition helps, but the symptoms and treatments are still a nightmare to navigate.

It's wild how wide-ranging the symptoms can be, which must make diagnosis even more difficult. I have a rant about how gendered diagnosis is as well, but I'm too tired to channel that rage atm.

Yup, exactly. This is probably a fairly common story. The pandemic made people more aware of POTS, ME/CFS, and MCAS, strengthened patient communities, and got some doctors to take those illnesses more seriously. Still a long way to go obviously, but I was relieved to put a name to it.

Your POTS predates the pandemic? Mine does too, though it wasn't diagnosed until I got long COVID. I saw so many doctors over the years, and they shrugged it off as "just" vasovagal syncope, as if that answered anything. Not a single one mentioned POTS. It was really scary.

I think this is true for health and body stuff in general. I get a lot of well-intentioned "have you tried..." It's usually not a big deal, and I can easily ignore it, but even so, there's still a small primitive part of my brain that starts shrilly screaming.

My GP told me that when she refers long COVID patients to cardiologists, the cardiologists virtually always push them to walk and run more. They have to endure multiple appointments, being told they're lazy before they're taken seriously, if at all.
Classic *facepalm* stuff.

List of countries by maternal mortality ratio - Wikipedia
It is by far safer to use birth control or have an abortion in the US than it is to give birth.
We have the same maternal mortality rate as Malaysia and Grenada. It's higher than the maternal mortality rate in Bahrain and Tajikistan.

Compare the way the right wing talks about the supposed risks of birth control and abortion to the way they talk about the real risk of childbirth in the US, which has the highest maternal mortality rate in the industrialized world, esp for WOC.
Spoiler: they don't talk about maternal mortality.
