On the older handshift/foot clutch models, the front brake was on the left side of the handlebar. The left grip also rotated to advance/retard the timing. Right grip was conventional throttle.

Oil changes are done on a hot bike, so do it after you go for a ride. Removing the sump bolt isn't the big deal, screwing it back on to the proper torque so you don't strip the thread is the important part. Buy a clicker torque wrench and sockets.
