We used to rent an 80-year-old house in the southwest German countryside. I loved the light when the morning sun broke through the front door.

This was the view from the window of my upper-floor study. The closes houses visible in this photo were built at a similar time like the one we lived in.

Just a short walk away from the village, there were big orchards filled with apple and cherry trees.

In winter, the orchards took on a very different appearance. (This photo was shot on film; the preceding three ones are iPhone shots).

7 years ago today, my wife and I left #Germany to start our new life in #Japan. As you can see, the environment was very much the opposite of #Tokyo - I sometimes miss waking up to the sound of birds singing.

Parker was killed 2/23/2021 by a childhood friend. They were both 23 years old. Parker's family and friends wore these ribbons when we went to court for sentencing in August of 2023. I'm grateful to POMC for all the information they provided, especially those early days. They also have support groups all over the country, which is helpful since laws and court processes vary from state to state. If you know someone affected by homicide, today is a good day to reach out and share a story of their loved one, or just tell them that you're thinking of them today.

Today is a day to remember victims of homicide. Established by Congress in 2007, it was chosen to commemorate Lisa Hullinger, she is forever 19. Her parents later founded Parents of Murdered Children (POMC), a national support organization.
