They Want To Ban Books To Keep Us From Coming Out Quick housekeeping! I’m doing a flurry of events once again: Tuesday I’ll be in the Koret Auditorium at the SF Public Library talking about banned books for...

Today is National Coming Out Day!

It's also Freedom to Read Day, aka the last day of Banned Books Week.

This feels right — because the main reason they try to ban books is to keep people from dreaming they could ever come out.

This is Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and considered to be the first person to write a computer programme which was for Babbage's Analytical Machine. She died in 1842
In her honour, today is Ada Lovelace Day and is all about encouraging women and girls in mathematics, science and engineering.

"Part of how these terms persist is as a site of fracture. Not only are we trying to encompass an unencompassable thing, but we can't even agree on what it is we're trying to approximate when we say 'science fiction'"

Oh this is perfect, exactly what I think about genres and categories and labels for books, and the first couple of sentences are the perfect starting point on the issue in my opinion 💖

Post from Angelica Chong saying "There is something incredibly satisfying about reading the first page of a book, and immediately something in your brain sits up and goes 'oh, I'm going to like this'-- and then every subsequent page proves you right."

I love all of these photos and details, and I'm always amazed at the perfect matching of the frames to the pictures, with so many trees in the background! 💖👏

All good advice in this thread. Short stories don't work well for me,if I finish one, I don't get the What's next itch. I pick novels of genres/authors I love, with short chapters / chapters with breaks within them, when my attention span is low. So I look forward to the next reading session #booksky

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.

TO THE LIGHT OF SEPTEMBER
When you are already here you appear to be only a name that tells of you whether you are present or not
and for now it seems as though
you are still summer
still the high familiar endless summer
yet with a glint
of bronze in the chill mornings and the late yellow petals of the mullein fluttering on the stalks that lean
over their broken
shadows across the cracked ground
but they all know that you have come
the seed heads of the sage the whispering birds with nowhere to hide you to keep you for later
you
who fly with them
you who are neither before nor after
you who arrive with blue plums
that have fallen through the night
perfect in the dew

Why I've become so intentional about what I draw attention to here: "what we notice, share & talk about influences what others notice too... it acts like a vote for what grows..When attention is poured into fear, it multiplies division. When it’s directed toward solutions, it multiplies possibility"

Reading the 2nd of Nghi Vo's 'Singing Hills Cycle,' WHEN THE TIGER CAME DOWN THE MOUNTAIN. Came across this line. I love when you can tell a writer's enjoying themselves.

'What was the point of being a Singing Hills cleric if they didn't get to ride a mammoth when the opportunity arose?'

Happy Petrov Day to those who celebrate. On September 26, 1983, Stanislav Petrov made the correct decision to not trust a computer.

I've attached a short clip from a reenactment of the situation in the documentary The Man Who Saved the World.

I heard Strange Currencies on the radio and fell in love with it, then I ended up revisiting R.E.M.'s back catalogue (I didn't have their previous albums yet) and became a fan for life. Still one of my favourite songs in general, but I also love Let Me In so very much. 💖 🎶 🎸

The old "my life will never be as complicated or screwed up as these people's lives!" thing is also a great benefit
