I grew up with Alex Pretti
The kind-hearted ICU nurse shot by federal agents was my childhood best friend.
Well, Kristen Radtke of The Verge just made me cry with this remembrance of her childhood best friend Alex Pretti.
"Alex was an easy playmate: generous, curious, sweet. His mother always ensured he had a tidy haircut and a clean room."

Small brass butterfly.
The underside of the butterfly, which has little pockets to store sewing needle packets. The underside of the wings are decorated with two plates. One carries an inscription of the drapers company: "Copestake, Moore, Crampton & Co. - London." The other has a gilded head of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, art, trade, and war.
The butterfly can be folded up, like how a butterfly flaps its wings.
A close-up of the butterfly's wings.
Beautiful 1860s Victorian butterfly, which was used to store small packets of sewing needles on the underside of the wings. This was a collaboration between a London-based drapers company and a sewing needle manufacturer. On exhibit at Tatter Blue, a Brooklyn textile museum.

Iβm sorry for the long post but a lot of you have followed me for a long time, since 2016 when I was one of the first to repeatedly call out Trump for being a Russian asset.
I donβt know how else to say this, as a person who has studied cults (wrote a bestseller about it) and totalitarian states.

The caption from Instagram reads: "I was commissioned to create a gift for a 50th wedding anniversary. I repaired a large chipped piece of a tea bowl using urushi lacquer and decorated it with peonies and Karakusa using Maki-e. The white peony symbolizes a happy marriage, and the Karakusa represents vitality. I hope they will continue to spend many happy years together." The photo shows a light grey tea bowl with a gold colored repair. There are decorative florals.
A painted ceramic has been repaired with gold lacquer. The repair looks like a leaf.
A tea bowl has been repaired with gold lacquer. The lacquer covers the areas where the bowl was previously broken.
A ceramic human skull is repaired with gold lacquer.
Really dig Yuko Gunji, a kintsugi artist in NYC. Kintsugi is the Japanese method of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and gold. Instead of trying to make things look new again, it highlights the faults, showing how something can be beautiful even after it was broken.

Allow me to address the elephant in the room: The decades-long outsourcing of domestic manufacturing to China was not an insidious Chinese conspiracy for dominance but the greedy strategy of the American ruling class to explode its profit margins by exploiting global inequality.

A photo of the Southwick manufacturing plant before it closed. The photo shows a bunch of people at various sewing stations. This was located in Massachusetts.
I support the US garment industry. I don't believe in making life harder for immigrants or erecting blanket tariffs. So how can we reshore some of our US garment manufacturing without xenophobia or protectionism? Here's my view. π§΅
