James Watson, dead at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers James Watson, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA who died Thursday at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Citation Diversity Statements - Nature Reviews Pyschology is encouraging authors to include a citation diversity statement to draw attention to citation imbalances and confirm they made efforts to cite publucations from a duverse group of researchers.

As you might expect, this Nature policy on citation diversity statements has received a massive backlash on X. However, I work in a field where fantastic work is done in India and China and I can say for a fact it does not get cited as often as equivalent work from the USA.

Solving molecular organic crystal structures from powders Powder diffraction is a widespread technique found in academic, forensic, industrial research and quality-control laboratories the world over. The recent article by Kabova et al. [(2025), Acta Cryst. C81, 559–569] provides step-by-step guidance on how to proceed and the software the authors use, from sample preparation and the powder diffraction measurement itself, to the verification of the final structure.
