Was a quick read, and interesting, though the various monologues paint a rather bleak — or is it clear-eyed? — picture of humanity, but that’s sort of what one expects from a Wallace Shawn play, I think.

New arrival at our house: Wallace Shawn, WHAT WE DID BEFORE OUR MOTH DAYS (Faber, 2025). Terrific to have a new play by Wallace Shawn, who turned 82 in November of last year, and now that I have it in hand, the published version immediately jumps to the top of my to-read pile.

My copies of those two albums are pretty much pristine. Great for me; sad for the kids who apparently didn’t get to listen to them very often.

The above recordings are super crackly. Sorry about that, but I’m not currently set up to convert my albums to mp3s.

It was a memorable day when I found the following two albums from my childhood — in great condition! — at a local secondhand store. Maurice Evans is a wonderful voice actor! His reading of “The Heffalump” is unmatched!

The only reason I was familiar with the album is that my parents had it in their small record collection. I have about one shelf-foot of albums that I have purchased second hand because I remember them being in that collection.

When I was a kid in maybe grade 7 or 8, someone at school asked me what my favourite band was, and I said Steppenwolf, though my only exposure to the band at that time was this album! And it remains a favourite. Also love the cover. Art direction & design by Gary Burden; photography by Henry Diltz.

A Siren wearing clothes with a messy updo bun of dark hair is gracefully posed in the mirror with her head tilted away and eyes closed. Her hand is cupping the head of an invisible figure. Two streams of dark liquid flow from dots on her neck. The mirror she poses in is antique brass and silver and very ornate
