Long-term care in the U.S. faces two existential threats: an immigration crackdown and Medicaid cuts The combined impacts of an immigration crackdown and slashing Medicaid budgets could create an exodus of long-term care workers.

How do you devastate an already-fragile system? Target its workers AND its funding.

In our @statnews.com op-ed, @rachelwerner.bsky.social and I explore how immigration enforcement & Medicaid cuts will impact millions who depend on long-term careβ€”and what we can do.

@rachelwerner.bsky.social and Norma Coe laying out the evidence. "...we know how crucial nursing home staff members areβ€”and why efforts to roll back the new minimum staffing rules pose such a threat to the residents and their families who rely on these staffers."

Opinion | Nursing Homes Owe More to Their Residents New rules requiring increased staffing and care are under attack.

Last year CMS increased nursing home staffing minimums in nursing homes, a major step toward protecting nursing home residents. Norma Coe and I estimate this will save 13,000 lives every year. This regulation is now under threat of repeal.

As the baby boom generation enters its prime years for long-term care needs, its difficult to come up with a more challenging backdrop than an immigration system about to be cut off at its knees (think: nursing home aides) and states having to fill in funding gaps from Medicaid spending shortfalls.
