#OTD in 1927, the Supreme Court decided Nixon v. Herndon, striking down a Texas law that barred Black voters from Democratic primaries. Dr. Lawrence A. Nixon of El Paso challenged his exclusion & won. The ruling helped pave the way to ending white primaries in 1944.

Born #OTD in 1877, JosΓ© TomΓ‘s Canales was a lawyer, businessman, & the only Mexican American state house rep in Texas in the early 20th century. He led an investigation into the Texas Rangers & helped establish LULAC.

Happy birthday to Ruben Salazar, born #OTD in 1928. A pioneering journalist, he brought national attention to the Mexican American experience and the Chicano Movement through his reporting at the Los Angeles Times and KMEX-TV. He was tragically killed in 1970 while covering the Chicano Moratorium.
