If you want to shape how healthcare research actually involves and engages the people it’s meant to serve – patients, NHS staff, and the public – and you’re passionate about making sure research doesn’t just happen to communities but with them, this role could be perfect for you.

Sadly, I won’t be able to make it to Manchester for #NHSConfedExpo. If you’re attending, do swing by and say hello to the @thisinstitute.cam.ac.uk team, including the marvellous @janekohara.bsky.social. And don’t miss the chance to pick up free copies of our latest resources.

This is an excellent discussion about something I think about all the time. I wanted to highlight 2 points:

It’s often easier and less time consuming to do more: ie just book the test, give the antibiotics, rather than spend time explaining why it’s unlikely to be helpful. HCWs are time pressured

Declining census response rates mean entire communities are becoming statistically invisible: β€œWhen people vanish from data, they vanish from policy. When certain groups are systematically undercounted – often minorities, rural communities or poorer people – they become invisible to policymakers.”

I hope we all agree that it’s vital to involve patients & public in healthcare improvement. But there isn’t always clarity on how to best do so in a meaningful way. This case study sets out how we worked in partnership with maternity service users to co-design inclusive & practical improvements.

'These [record-breaking] numbers speak to the huge effort that has gone into meeting the high level of demand for primary care, but need to be seen within the context of declining patient satisfaction and high numbers of GPs struggling to manage overwhelming patient demand.' The group gather around around the village Christmas tree for the light switch on and a Christmas Carol singalong. The tree can be seen on the left side of the photo. On the right you can just make out the corner of the 16th century pub.

Kicking off December with a Christmas Carol singalong. This is my favourite annual village event (pancake racing down the high street is a close second).

β€˜change moves at the speed of trust’ Stephen Covey. Written on a post-it note.

β€˜Change moves at the speed of trust.’ I’m reminded daily how true this is.

All time invested in building & maintaining trust is time well spent.

Gloss over trust at your peril & watch the pace of work drop, costs & energy use increase & change stagnate.

This starts with us trusting others.
