This means you need to go through 95% of this really dangerous level on just two hearts. But if you hit a checkpoint and jump into the nearest pit as fast as you can, you can replenish a lost heart. The time penalty is very small since you just hit a checkpoint, and now you have an extra heart.

however, I just now found a genuine use for it - replenishing your hearts. Tumblin' Totems Turbo Attack is BRUTAL because theres a bunch of tiny platforms, lots of damaging enemies and obstacles that arent easy to avoid while keeping up a fast pace, and you dont get a DK Barrel until the literal end

whenever you die in DKC Returns during Time/Turbo Attack, you start back at the last checkpoint. I always found this annoying because the gold medal times are REALLY stringent, so there's no way to make up for lost time and you need to wait an extra loading screen to reset the level.

I do think some of it can be chalked up to the idea of Illumination Mario being pretty "vanilla" now, so there's a better idea of what to expect. the "it's being made by Illumination" to "Chris Pratt is Mario" to "there's gonna be a TON of stuff from the games actually" pipeline was pretty wild lol
