βItβs All Cronyism Going Forwardβ
A flu researcher the Trump administration elevated to power will now benefit from a massive funding award.
Matthew Memoli, a middling researcher at NIH, criticized COVID vaccine mandates and DEI, and was chosen by Trump to dismantle NIH. Memoli becomes NIHβs principal deputy director and awards himself and close collaborator Jeffery Taubenberger up to $500 million for in-house vaccine research. Cool.

Effective May 5, 2025, NOAAβs National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) will decommission its snow and ice data products from the Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (COGS). As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basicβmeaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported. This includes Sea Ice Index, Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) Data Products, Glacier Photograph Collection, U.S. National Ice Center Arctic Sea Ice Charts and Climatologies in Gridded Format Gridded Monthly Sea Ice Extent and Concentration, 1850 Onward World Glacier Inventory. If you rely on these products in your work, research, education, or planning, we invite you to share your story at nsidc@nsidc.org. Your input can help us demonstrate the importance of these data sets and advocate for future support.
This is horrible. I don't even know what to say. Some of our most key polar data.

A study, using our climate model MAR, lead by my colleague Brice Noel (FNRS) and published in Nature Communications, links the rapid mass loss of Patagonian glaciers to a poleward shift of subtropical high-pressure systems.

Anson wearing a fitted mask and lying on a table in a hospital about to be treated with radiation therapy for head and neck cancer
Photo of Ansonβs face showing the imprint of the mask on his face that they had to wear every day to receive radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. The mask was tight!!
As the UK went into lockdown 5 years ago today, I went into a deserted London to start radiation β’οΈ therapy for HPV related head & neck cancer. I had to wear this extremely tight fitting mask for 15 mins every day for 7 weeks. The saga still goes onβ¦ #cancersky #hpvcancer #fuckcancer

Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats.
After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.

Last day of #lgbtqhistorymonth, yet at home & abroad weβre still fighting for our rights, rights that are being rolled back at terrifying speed. Iβm wearing a pink triangle even when I was 20, fighting for lgbtq rights 40 years ago. The fight is all of ours π³οΈββ§οΈπ³οΈβπ #lgbtq

What Cuban scientists taught me about the power of real teamwork
The best teams value the voices of every member, this professor argues
Teamwork, equality, and respect sorely missing today. Saddened by all the division. Remembering fondly our science colleagues in Cuba and what they taught me about working together as a team no matter our differences. Here's a short reflection from 2020.π§ͺππ

Linear-viscous flow of temperate ice
Accurately modeling the deformation of temperate glacier ice, which is at its pressure-melting temperature and contains liquid water at grain boundaries, is essential for predicting ice sheet discharg...
Not seeing a lot of discussion about this. Some researchers have estimated the Glen's flow law exponent n as ~ 1 rather than 3-4 for temperate ice. This could mean that the world's most critical glaciers are linear-viscous are their base.
