The new season is wonderful because it connects to the previous run through _characters,_ not through callbacks. Yeah, fans will smile with recognition when they spot a Chuck Mangione reference. But this season is still about watching well-defined characters reacting to challenges. (And it's funny.)

Every character with the capacity for change has changed in ways that are real and grounded. Even Hank and Peggy have moved forward. All of the kids, especially Bobby, are truly written as young adults.

As for the rest, Dale is still Dale…as is only correct. (2/3)

I got early access to the new season of "King Of The Hill" and watched the whole lot. It's terrific! It's not a reboot and not a nostalgia-bore. It's legitimately a new season from a team that's had a lot of time to rest and think. (1/2)

(Yes, I'm sure it's not sick. Yes, it's the same raccoon. Yes, a raccoon in an attic would be Bad, but I don't believe it has access to the inside. The building is a long-vacant business, in a spot where it's unlikely to encounter humans (my window is across an alley). It's clearly harmless.)

Roof-Rac Update!

I've seen it once or twice more since his first appearance a couple of months ago. It's clearly healthy. For reasons best explained by a raccoon, it just likes to sleep in the cradle-like divot at the end of the roofline of the building next to mine from time to time. Monday photo.

Pro tip: if your walk includes a half-hour stop at a bench or table along a popular path, many awesome dogs will come up to you for head skritchies while they're being walked.

They say that the Altamont tragedy marked the official end of the 1960s. The appearance of this chair on the curb today marks the official end of the 1990s.

It's definitely full of that Meta/Facebook magic, isn't it? Its engagement algorithms protect you from seeing anything from people you're actually interested in, to make sure that the engineered engagement-bait is always front and center.

I'm excited about "Fantastic Four." I'm also scared that the movie will begin with a title card that reads "Well, of _course_ it was an awesome trailer. If we told you that this is just more multiverse bull**** exclusively for obsessive MCU and Disney+ viewers, you wouldn't have bought the ticket."

YouTube video by Andy Ihnatko MacBreak 978 Post-Game Show!

That thing I did last week? Where I recorded a wrapup/wind-down of the MacBreak episode I just recorded with @leolaporte.me @snell.zone and @alexlindsay.bsky.social on @twit.tv ?

...I did it again.

(In 720p, because I forgot to change my webcam settings.)

Art museums are hypocrites. I bet if a tourist accidentally put a rip in a Monet while taking a selfie and then they looked in the hole and discovered a second, even better Monet behind the first one that they never knew about, they'd be all like "Oo, we _love_ it when careless people take selfies…"

I am disappointed by the revelation, but I am willing to accept that my parents and grandparents were right. During hot weather, my problem isn't "the AC isn't turned up high enough." It's "I haven't given myself time to acclimate." FINE now it's set just high enough to take the edge off.

Photo of a library table. A MacBook, iPad, notepad, and water bottle are laid out as for a quiet session. A color print of a poster, printed on letter sized paper, is propped against the MacBook screen. The poster is in Italian, except for a title in English that reads: "No space for Bezos." The poster urges people of Venice, Italy to join a mass protest against the disruption Jeff Bezos' wedding is causing for the city

...and _then_ I remembered that this library where I'm working has a pay-per-page color printer that patrons can access right through the library's website. SUPPORT LOCAL LIBRARIES THEY'RE UNIFORMLY AWESOME

I’m trying to imagine the MLB or a team’s front office telling George Brett or Pete Rose or Albert Belle β€œFrom now on, every time you hit a home run, you’ve got to put on this goofy hat or wave this silly prop as soon as you return to the dugout. You’ll look real dumb, but it’s good television.”

Raiding this closet is ASPIRATIONAL for a film geek.

Every time there's a new Criterion Collection "Closet Picks" video featuring someone who (as it happens) I've never heard of, it gives me some hope. "Lots of people haven't heard of _me_…maybe I've got a shot?"

I did something brand-new after we finished recording MacBreak Weekly on @twit.tv this week: I recorded a quick post-show debrief before I broke down my Library Mobile Livestream Command Center.

Will I make another one next week?

It's shaping up to be a very close game here at the town beach! Charcoal-Grilled Meat Smell is currently ahead of Dank Skunky Marijuana Smell by a significant – but by no means secure – margin. I hope they can blunt Marijuana Smell's legendary tenacious offense through the final quarter.
