Just spent two late weekend nights nerding the f* out, and now I'm going to spend a little of my Sunday morning bringing you the fruits of my labors! Stare at these trees with me. What do you see?

Just found an absolutely stonking male Collared Flycatcher at Creachan, a species I've been dreaming of finding for years! This is the first for Barra and the third for the Outer Hebrides. #BirdingScotland #RareBirdsUK

There's something about interesting and/or experimental nests. They're apparently the most delicious for every potential predator in the area 😂

Could you get samples from all of the chicks to see if they're related? Would be cool if plovers do intraspecific brood parasitism!

Just reposting this which I think is the most gorgeous thing I have seen in my career - a critically endangered orange-bellied parrot feeding on a carpet of daisies after an ecological burn. This was the first time they’d had the chance to feed naturally in 15y and was wonderful to witness

The ABC interviewed the @adriftlab.bsky.social team on Lord Howe Island last month. Even this article doesn't capture the feeling of heartbreak and grim reality of feeling plastic crunch inside a live seabird chick. #ornithology #PlasticPollution

Pied Flycatcher! 🥰🥰🥰
This will be my first year since 2012 where I'll not see a Collared Flycatcher. But at least I got to see a singing male Pied today in a woodland in central Shropshire 🪶

The Mental Health Impacts of Scientific Fieldwork
Opinion | Difficult conditions at remote field sites can put researchers under physical, mental, and emotional strain.
Safety and wellbeing during fieldwork has been recognised for decades as an issue for all kinds of reasons. Although we are still so slow in making any progress on this topic. It's never a priority and demands for change are resisted. An interesting recent update here undark.org/2025/04/17/o...

Senegal is great. I was there for fieldwork, so I didn't get to explore as much as I would have liked to. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Watching hundreds of Hooded Vultures slowly rise into the air at dawn over Dakar is one of my enduring birding memories.

I saw 6 species in Senegal with very little effort (White-headed, Hooded, Rüppell's, Griffon, Lappet-faced, White-backed) and you'd also get Palm-nut there if you head south. Cheaper to get to and travel around than the East African countries.
