ADHD is under diagnosed. Partly because it’s quite a long form and there’s so much else to read.

ADHD IS NOT OVER-DIAGNOSED
To rebut recent media claims, we've updated our page on the ADHD diagnosis rate. Now with the latest data it is fact based rebuttal to over-diagnosis claims with clear data to the contrary - we have under-diagnosis of ADHD.
• 9 million GP records analysed in recently published research found ADHD diagnosed for just 0.32% of patients. Roughly 1 in 9 of those expected - showing the vast majority without a diagnosis. The British Journal of Psychiatry, Published Jan 2025].
• Our own analysis of NHS data on ADHD medication indicates underdiagnosis in every area of England and wide variance between areas.
• Just 12% of all ADHD prescriptions are issued privately [BBC Research, Jan
2025].
• Long waits for ADHD diagnosis make over-diagnosis near impossible.
ADHD is underdiagnosed. A diagnosis and support is life changing for many.

Do you think this “over-diagnosis” nonsense happened with left-handedness? Or with dyslexia? Just because heaps of people had _up until now_ been unidentified, and society was still playing catch up?

A screenshot from the Times newspaper reads: “Research by Professor Stephen Faraone, president of the World Federation of ADHD, suggests global rates of ADHD are at about 5 per cent for children, and between 2 and 3 per cent among adults, depending on age.
In Britain, that equates to 1.6 million adults and 700,000 children: 2.3 million people. However, with only about 248,000 patients receiving ADHD medication on the NHS, it suggests the condition may be being underdiagnosed.”

Hmmm - a change of heart at the Times re: ADHD? I’ve been banging on about this particular point re “over diagnosis” (spoiler: there isn’t any) for ages. A very balanced and thoughtful article…

Not re-posting the DM cos it's crass, but fuming re: their article on 'sickfluencers' encouraging ADHDers to get benefits so they can work... Um...they're _working_ because of this support?! They'll pay tax, have better mental health, need less support elsewhere. Isn't it obvious? #ADHD

Wonder how many kids have been punished or labelled as ‘attention-seeking’ when they’re actually living with undiagnosed ADHD and it’ll only all make sense when they’re older.
