This black and white photo shows the remains of a black basalt lava flow on a hillside. The lava has formed stark black pillars which stand out against the sky. The hillside is covered with grasses and shrubs, as well as ejecta boulders. John Day NM is well worth a visit, but is quite isolated, and the various units require a lot of driving. Best to camp nearby, and spread the visit over a couple of days, instead of half a day as I stupidly did.
