Finally got a chance to image Comet Lemmon last night: cloud and sheer ill-luck has plagued attempts over the last month.

The Moon and the low elevation made it tough, as did my guiding camera refusing to work. Still, a nice way to say goodbye to this icy visitor. #astrophotography

STRAP-HANGING
BY PLANE/
PASSENGERS' PLIGHT
From Our Own Correspondent
Cork, Saturday.
MR. L O'SHAUGHNESSY, of Kilfinane, County Limerick, had a terrifying experience when he went for his first aeroplane ride with his brother in a demonstration plane at Tipperary
O'Shaughnessy did not use straps with which people
are ordinarily
strapped into the machine and when at 3,000 feet the pilot manΕ“uvred the machine for an upside-down flight he was pitched out of his seat. Just as he was almost out of the plane he grabbed two leather straps and held on for dear life.
As soon as the machine was righted again he scrambled into the seat and thanked heaven for his marvellous escape. But worse was to come, for the pilot was unaware that his passenger was not strapped in, and up he went for more height and then looped the loop.
Out O'Shaughnessy was pitched again, but managed to hold on to the straps.
That was bad enough, but when he was once more congratulating himself that the worst was over the loop operation was repeated twice.
Every moment that O'Shaughnessy was hanging on for grim death he thought would be his last. Still when he landed he did not seem at all dismayed by his adventure and said he would go up again, but next time he will be certain that he is properly strapped in.

Some absolutely incredible things being discovered in family archives this evening… including this absolute BATSHIT story about how my grandfather and namesake very nearly didn’t live long enough to sire my father or any of his siblings. 🀯

Letter from Kurt Vonnegut to high school students -

"Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta:
I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I don’t make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana.
What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.
Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend you’re Count Dracula.

Here’s an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you don’t do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But don’t tell anybody what you’re doing. Don’t show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK?
Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash recepticals. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what’s inside you, and you have made your soul grow.
God bless you all!
Kurt Vonnegut"

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

A blue/yellow nebula illuminated by a blue star

Just having a quick look at some of the test/shakedown data I took on Thursday night, after my long imaging hiatus.

This is IC 405, the Flaming Star Nebula. It's illuminated by the variable star AE Aurigae, a runaway star kicked out of the Orion Nebula 2 million years ago. #astrophotography

Buddy, I can see mountains reflected in the eyes of a trailside pika.
