It's *extremely* common for people to not realize anything serious is going on until their cat is simply too sick to fake it anymore, and unfortunately by then sometimes they're just too far gone. It doesn't mean you weren't paying attention and taking excellent care of her.

As far as knowing about her kidneys, cats have a very strong instinct to hide any health problems because looking sick is like a big flashing "eat me" sign for predators.
