The dirt road to the Grotto trailhead is in pretty bad shape with mud and potholes.

Reminder, the gate at the entrance to Hyalite Canyon is now closed through May 16th. A great opportunity to bike, run or walk up the canyon without car traffic! (2/2)

Road report for March 28, our last for the season. With the warm weather this week, the road up Hyalite is in excellent condition: bare pavement up to the reservoir and beyond with wet pavement in a few spots and some potholes. (1/2)

Road report for Mar. 28th: The road to the Hyalite reservoir is in great condition with bare pavement. In contrast the dirt road to Grotto is muddy with deeply rutted snow/ice. The gate at the entrance to Hyalite Canyon will close Monday evening March 31st and remain closed until May 16th. Enjoy!

Road report for March 21st: The road was plowed Wed. and is in great shape; much of the road is now bare pavement. The parking lots and some turnouts have been plowed but only limited parking at the reservoir. Vandals have taken the Pallet Fire Ban sign but a ban remains in force - NO PALLET FIRES!

March 14 road report 🚙 Despite the snow last night, Hyalite Canyon Road is mostly clear in the bottom half due to sunny skies and the warm afternoon. Be aware of changing conditions as you get higher, slush patches in the shade, and (1/2)

Road Report for March 14: Hyalite received several inches of wet snow on Thursday night. The road was plowed on Friday morning and road conditions range from wet, bare pavement to slippery, slush covered pavement to hard-packed snow and ice. Turnouts and parking lots were not plowed on Friday.

The middle part of the canyon has bare roads, with some snowpack. From the Blackmore Parking lot on up, the road is mostly snow packed.

Have fun this weekend, the weather looks favorable. Be aware of wet slides; always good to check the avalanche report before you head out. (2/2)

Road report for March 7: Variable conditions ⚠️

In the morning before it warms up the bottom third of the canyon has icy ruts. The ruts remain and are slushy by 1 p.m. Watch for falling rocks in this area. (1/2)

Hyalite Road report 2/28. Hyalite Canyon is largely bare, but shady stretches are still covered by rutted, packed snow and ice that can be slippery. One car slid off the road Friday when it encountered one of these stretches going too fast. The road to the Grotto Falls is packed snow and ice.

Mark your calendar for our upcoming Spring Cleanup Day, on May, 17. We’ll share more details as we get closer. Keeping Hyalite clean, helping with projects and being a good steward is one way you can help fill a need in the wake of these losses. (5/end)

Only 2 staff remain to manage rental cabins, campgrounds, toilets and various other infrastructure.
Other employees lost include fisheries techs, an invasive species tech, a road engineer, researchers and front office staff.

What we know:
On Feb. 14, 43 Forest Service staff in the Bozeman and Yellowstone Ranger Districts were fired.
That’s about 26% of the entire FS workforce in these 2 ranger districts.
Only 3 trail maintenance workers remain to cover about 1,424 miles of designated hiking and motorized trails. (2/?)

Road Report Feb. 21 🚗 The Hyalite Canyon road, turn outs and trailhead parking lots were plowed on Thursday and are in excellent condition with hard-packed snow in shade and patches of wet pavement in sun. Nordic trails have been groomed. Looks like a great weekend to head up to Hyalite. Enjoy!
