One of the biggest things to me in appeal in a drawing is the contrast between straight and curved in form. It’s not universal for every type of drawing, but for me personally it’s important and often when I see a drawing that feels mushy, it’s lacking this. This diagram is by Stephen E. Gordon (?)

which is a round about way of kind of saying 'both' lmao. Because i can always add lighting and colour/tone adjustments on top of the base/local colours.

ill usually colour pick and then adjust colours as needed for the art piece. esp if someone uses pure black or pure white, as i don't like to have those as 'base' colours in my work, so ill usually give those a tint, usually depending on the setting im drawing the character in.
