Cell types and layers differently shape the geometry of neural representations in a biophysically detailed model of the neocortical microcircuit. A central problem in Neuroscience is understanding how the neocortical microcircuit encodes stimuli for perceptual decisions. Theoretical models of cortical networks are mathematically convenient tool...

I’ve decided that explicitly teaching about how science funding works needs to be a part of my neurobiology lab course — it’s something I haven’t included before, and that was an oversight.

Please send any teaching resources you might find helpful. I’ll share what I end up developing.

Dynamics of specialization in neural modules under resource constraints - Nature Communications The extent to which structural modularity in neural networks ensures functional specialization remains unclear. Here the authors show that specialization can emerge in neural modules placed under reso...

What's the right way to think about modularity in the brain? This devilish 😈 question is a big part of my research now, and it started with this paper with @solarpunkgabs.bsky.social, finally published after the first preprint in 2021! 🤖🧠🧪

What if… spontaneous neural activity 🧠 reflects the baseline rumblings of a brainwide dynamical system initialized for learning? We find that the rumblings have macroscopic properties like those emerging from linear symmetric, critical systems 🧵 #neuroscience #neuroAI www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Six tips for going public with your lab’s software: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03344-y
1) make time for maintenance
2) simplify installation
3) add a GUI or good CLI
4) good documentation
5) use github/git
6) automated testing

Any other tips people have? #SoftwareEngineering

Our model predicts that the cortical microcircuit reshapes its stimulus-induced embeddings from input to output layers so as to improve perceptual discrimination.

Fifth International Convention on the Mathematics of Neuroscience and AI

I am super excited to present our new findings this Thurs 16:20 at the Mathematics of Neuroscience & AI conv. in Rome! neuromonster.org. We use @trackingactions.bsky.social’s lab cebra to probe stimulus-induced cortical embeddings by layer, cell type, in a biophysical model of cortical microcircuit.
