it's funny you can see how much the New Deal fixed macroeconomic stability within the United States, and the elite hated FDR for it
06.03.2026 17:26 β π 732 π 169 π¬ 14 π 14I share this frustration. So, if I suspect AI usage, I simply assign a minimum score and leave a comment that the student needs to come and talk to me. If they don't, the grade stands. If they do, then I investigate. This (more) aligns effort between the parties.

What @faineg.bsky.social has identified makes an existing problem worse. And that existing problem has been ongoing for well over a decade as it reverts to a terribly strategically inept mean that we fell into after Vietnam. 1/

(Bear in mind that the book this department uses is Baby's First Casebook - about 30% of the text is judicial opinions, and the rest is author-generated discussion and explanation.)

06.03.2026 11:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If you took $1 billion and gave it to the endowment of a different small college each day, they could each provide a free college education to several hundred students per year in perpetuity. Instead we are using that money to bomb schools and kill students in Iran, for no clearly stated purpose.

AI detectors serve exactly one purpose - convincing their audience that it is possible to automate AI detection.
Also, I quietly love the "in equilibrium" which absolutely concedes that if we demand accountability and responsibility we can get it.

This is what regulation is for. This is what social and professional norms are for. This is what culture is for.
If we, as a society, decide to marginalize the people using nonsense, then nonsense will only be used by the fringe.
None of which requires the use of the transformer model that is the subject of AI concerns. You can do this stuff using the 2016 machine learning toolkit, and do it just as well, and never have to worry about the box pissing on you.
06.03.2026 10:53 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sure, but a less-burdensome way to avoid these issues is just not to use the thing or tolerate its use.
06.03.2026 10:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I mean, sure, but my opposition is straight-up built on an understanding of the tech and the statistics involved. The box don't do what it says it do. I follow Maxim 43: "If it's stupid and it works, it's still stupid and you got lucky."
