Everyone with a stake in a software system should have the right to understandable answers for their questions about the (inside of the) system.

Have very much been enjoying Shining Pearl, all of the nostalgia plus the good features of the modern games (much easier to manage TMs & HMs)

On volume 11 of 12 of the Histories of Middle Earth, The War of the Jewels.

Goal was to read all 12 this year before tackling the Silmarillion then finally rereading LOTR for the first time in over a decade.

"But hope? Hope, that is another matter, of which even the Wise seldom speak."

welcome to all new bluesky users. please keep in mind that it is still in beta. there are many features still missing, so please be patient. for example, you may notice that this app loads posts and then shows them to you, instead of not doing that for some reason.

Echo chambers, filter bubbles, and polarisation: a literature review

Echo chambers, filter bubbles, and polarisation: a literature review

Echo chambers, filter bubbles, and the relationship between news and media use and various forms of polarisation has to be understood in the context of increasingly digital, mobile, and platform-dominated media environments where most people spend a limited amount of time with news and many internet users do not regularly actively seek out online news, leading to significant inequalities in news use.

When defined as a bounded, enclosed media space that has the potential to both magnify the messages delivered within it and insulate them from rebuttal, studies in the UK estimate that between six and eight percent of the public inhabit politically partisan online news echo chambers.

Studies in the UK and several other countries show that the forms of algorithmic selection offered by search engines, social media, and other digital platforms generally lead to slightly more diverse news use – the opposite of what the β€œfilter bubble” hypothesis posits – but that self-selection, primarily among a small minority of highly partisan individuals, can lead people to opt in to echo chambers, even as the vast majority do not.

In summary, the work reviewed here suggests echo chambers are much less widespread than is commonly assumed, finds no support for the filter bubble hypothesis and offers a very mixed picture on polarisation and the role of news and media use in contributing to polarisation.

There was never a strong empirical basis for "echo chambers," "filter bubbles," and the like. It was a way of diagnosing our political divisions that implied the habits and dispositions of centrist politicians and the legacy press were the solutions. So guess who ran with them?

Speeding up Postgres Queries by 200x with Analyze Postgres uses an internal table called β€˜pg_statistic’ to keep track of some metadata on all tables in the DB. Postgres’s Planner uses these statistics when estimating the cost of operations, which, if out of date, can cause the Planner to pick a suboptimal plan for our query. To trigger an update of β€˜pg_statistic’ manually for a table, we can run β€˜ANALYZE’ on it, helping the Planner estimate costs better and speeding up queries dramatically (in some cases).

I was debugging a slow PostgreSQL query in my BSky database today and learned something new about DB Query Planning that sped up my slow query by ~207x .

tl:dr; Run ANALYZE on your tables if you are under-estimating cost.

You can read about it here - https://jazco.dev/2023/05/20/postgres-analyze/
