I have Steam shame. If I have an idle/pomodoro game running, I’ll often let my computer go to sleep for the night and not turn it off. But now Steam tells my friends I’ve been playing this game for 1300 hours.

For better or worse, I’ve discovered that experiencing beloved stories over and over means their flaws, however slight, will make themselves known. (I still have an unhealthy obsession with the few very personal first person statements in A Christmas Carol. What did they MEAN?)

Me- “hey, how come you’ve never danced with me holding canapés?”
Jim- “because they’d end up on the floor.”

I LOVE this movie. Which is why I’m watching it. But sadly “I love this sweet scene” is not amusing commentary. I’d rather pontificate on why Amanda is wearing heels in snow and how someone doesn’t jump on the Jude Law train when he says “I love you”

I’m yelling “he’s coming in after the whole theater is seated? He should have been there an hour before and coming from backstage!” I guess that won’t show his triumph on the stairs. (Note- not skeptical that it’s a triumph, skeptical that it took a few days and gumption to get in shape)

Like The Last Holiday, this movie basically ignores Christmas and goes from Hanukkah, to Christmas Eve in a video store (what’s that?) to New Year’s Eve, the big holiday.

Best scenes- montage of taking a frail, forgetful old man and making him strong enough for public appearance in a few days.

BAH Amanda’s divorce story is nothing compared to mine. Mom left and I then vomited every 15 minutes all night. It was *awesome*. After a few times I started looking at it with a scientific interest. How did my body suddenly become a perfect timepiece of wretchedness?

I will say that the old man is clearly neurodivergent in that his house looks like every other writer’s house (including mine) I’ve seen, while Amanda’s slick film job is done in a house with zero clutter (zero personality).

Is this a romance or a story about dog neglect. Or murder; does the dog ever come back?

Iris spots the old movie writer toddle by. Later she will stop him on the road and help him, creating a beautiful new friendship. My experience with this is people don’t like their weaknesses pointed out by strangers. Or I do a shit job offering help.

Ok so she’s giving up and leaving Iris’s poor dog to freeze or starve in the cottage. I thought her ex was narcissistic but now I’m not thinking the best about her.

Would rather play a blinking game with a dog than read a book. Amanda makes me cry.
