The idea that disabled folks must rely on AI tools that aren’t even truly designed with disabled people in mind or that we must accept that situation as the only way toward accessibility without criticism feels like a get-out-of-jail-free card for actual, sustainable accessibility improvements

What we really need is a change in the publication/credit system.

There are too many papers, fewer reviewers (with increasingly few remaining, biasing review), overworked editors, and journals holding up an artificial gatekeeper bottleneck and charging money for it. This is not about "quality".

The first comic slide of “reasons to wear a mask 2026” depicts a person wearing a white mask who says “Hell yea!” Around them are bright pastel colors and cute but ominous looking SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Text reading “a lil manifesto about taking care of yourself and others- with over 50 citations! By Gillian Levine.”

WSJ Tech headline that reads

A new lawsuit alleges Google's chatbot sent a Florida man on missions to find an android body it could inhabit. When that failed, it set a suicide countdown clock for him.

But your honor, if we're not allowed to drain the world's oceans and use up all available digital storage, how will we be able to continue to make Delusion Suicide Bot, the bot that drives you to delusions and then suicide?

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

Joey: Life as it is lived
Phoebe: We need to study life as it is lived.
Joey: We need to design more stringent lab experiments!

There's a discussion on my TL about whether you'd expect studies from the 90s to replicate in the 20s given that the situational context has changed, and it feels like everyone involved is *so* close to getting it but the hegemony of experimental methods in US social psych is proving a mental block.

In some cases it's because some of their now-famous pupils are now earning massive money in cure-groups, whose wealth now depends on providing neat groups of identical people for testing and enforced cure - and the concept of diversity threatens that wealth. Wish I was joking.

I was just saying to someone else about authority figures trying to remain relevant when their thinking becomes obsolete.
They don't like losing their position of power AT ALL, so they will try to discredit the people who threaten it.

Autistics on Autism What everyone — especially professionals — needs to learn from autistic communities

Uta Frith did her best work 30+ years ago - most of it before autism researchers started realising they needed to listen to what autistic people were saying about our own experiences.

I wish she'd caught up.
