In most cases these humans knowingly choose less money in favor of some stability and an opprotunity to contribute to the greater good. Our universities - including the medical research which happens in them - are one of the things that make America truly great. They are the envy of the world.

What I do miss the most are my friends/colleagues who make a place like the University of Michigan go. They, my newer friends/colleagues and the University of Washington, and people all over the country who study and work and experiment and teach and train are very worried right now.

My decision to leave academic medicine (and not return, yet 😜) left me with very few regrets...
