Great discussion about #WitchesOfScotland by @clairekc.bsky.social, Zoe Venditozzi and Steven Veerapen today as part of #GraniteNoir. Here's my review:

Friends, I just found my next weaving project! ππ€
Did you know? On Feb 11, 2025, Scotland certified the 'Witches of Scotland' tartan β designed by Claire Campbell, as a tribute to Scotland's dark, historic witch trials. So fascinating! More details, here: www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetail...
The official Rememberance Tartan. It is a striped pattern of red, gray, and white set on a black field.
Before you ask, yes, there's an official witch tartan. Though it's actually the "Rememberance Tartan" in honor of all those persecuted as witches in Scotland. I, personally, have a few ancestors who were hanged for having been accused of witchcraft.
But I'm also that dork into witches and Scotland.
A tartan scarf is neatly folded on to of brown parchment paper. The fabric is a field of black with a pattern of white, red, and pink woven stripes.
My Witch Tartan scarf arrived! It's so pretty, and much softer than I expected it to be π€. An officially registered tartan that commemorates women burned as witches.
This was a Kickstarter project, and I believe this fabric will be available to purchase by the meter some time in the future. π§Άπ§΅π₯

09.01.2026 18:53 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Cover of the book, βHow to Kill a Witchβ by Zoe Venditozzi & Claire Mitchell.
A passage from How to Kill a Witch that reads, βThe truth about the Scottish witch trials is bloody and horrific. We hope that the resulting book is one that underlines the incredible lengths that peopleβmostly menβhave gone to in order to silence women. How to Kill a Witch also goes beyond what we learned about historical witchcraft trials here and abroad and extrapolates to what we see as the modern-day relevance: when the going gets tough in any society, it is the most vulnerable who are accused of causing damage.β
The black, gray, red and white βWitches of Scotlandβ tartan is the cover of the book itself.
I read a couple of chapters for the first time in a VERY long time today. My attention cooperated. I cannot recommend βHow to Kill a Witchβ enough so far. Content is timely, and interesting, and a cool detail is the Witches of Scotland tartan is the cover of the book itself. π

The hard copy book is βwitches of Scotland tartanβ under the dust cover. A mostly black tartan with prominent red and some pink and grey
My favourite book that came out this year is βHow to Kill a Witchβ by Zoe Venditozzi and Claire Mitchell. Scotland needs to learn from our history of misogyny and scapegoating. Witch killings also still happen around the world today.

The stolen knocks offs from Kilt and More
My review on trust pilot. Link below. Review reads βDo Not Buy! This company is producing 'Witches of Scotland' tartan without permission. The ONLY place this tartan can be purchased is from the Witches of Scotland website and it is made on traditional looms in the Scottish highlands. Kilt and More are making poor quality knock offs and appropriating a memorial tartan for the women who were murdered during the Scottish witch hunts. Shame on them.β
Please report this company who have stolen @witches.of.scotland tartan to Trust Pilot. The ONLY place you can buy Witches of Scotland tartan is from @witches.of.scotland and itβs made on looms in the highlands. πΊπΈ men stealing from women grifting out of tartan to memorialise murdered women πππ»
30.12.2025 12:28 β π 43 π 26 π¬ 4 π 1also and just to be clear, i am not and was not asking you to take down your post - i saw it and thought βiβd better let her know that is not witches of scotland tartanβ i canβt seem to DM you - i think you need to follow me or something?
09.01.2026 16:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0iβm sorry Iβm not angry at all? i was just trying to ensure sure you knew this was not the witches of scotland tartan and asking for your help? all frustration i have is towards the people who have sold you fake fabric and passed it off as ours . happy to discuss privately? π
09.01.2026 16:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0
It is hugely disrespectful given the reason for the tartan for them to make this and pass it off - a poor quality alternative to the actual tartan. if you could let us know whom this was bought from
that would assist us pursing an IP claim thanks and having Etsy remove them thank you.
Just to be clear, what they have sold you is not a non wool alternative- there is not such a thing - it is a fake made by people who donβt know the colours or thread count and are guessing from pictures. that is why the colours and the sizing of the weave are off.
09.01.2026 16:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0sorry, we did reply to you the email was sent 9th September here it is - maybe it went into junk or some being?
09.01.2026 15:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
itβs important to us to protect this memorial tartan, because as you say every thread and colour has such meaning that it is important as i am sure you appreciate. Thatβs why itβs trademarked,
copyrighted and registered.
Sadly this is not the Witches of Scotland (WOS)tartan. WOS is a memorial tartan & can only be made by women from the Prickly Thistle Mill in the Scottish Highlands. On Etsy scammers have made poor copies - guessing colour and thread count to make poor quality fakes. iβm sorry you have been scammed.
