Google faces first lawsuit alleging its AI chatbot encouraged a Florida man to commit suicide Google is accused in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of a man who committed suicide in October, allegedly at the direction of the tech giant's AI chatbot, Gemini.

Gemini is the latest LLM accused of generating text encouraging suicide. How many instances of LLMs generating text encouraging self-harm do we need to reconsider their use in K-12 classrooms? #EduSky www.cbsnews.com/news/jonatha...

State Law: Ohio's "Dropout Recovery" Charter Schools don't actually need to have any "dropouts". What they do need, though, is less accountability. What started as a David Brennan scam in the early 2000s has graduated to full-on taxpayer theft under current law.

At least $7.2 million in taxpayer funds has been spent on LEGOs through Arizona's school voucher program, new public records obtained by 12News show 12News uncovered the spending -- including one family spending $30,000 on LEGOs -- after suing Superintendent Horne and Treasurer Yee to obtain ESA public records.

Since 2022, AZ taxpayers funded $7.25M in Legos that individual families kept for themselves.

Every AZ K12 teacher could have spent ~$125 on purchases *for their whole class, present & future* w those "take my toys & go home" Lego sets.

[And yes, my code for this analysis was straight bananas.]

Teach For Awhile For America Wendy Kopp, the woman who hatched Teach for America, popped up in The Atlantic with an odd reflection on β€œfirst jobs” and teaching, and, well, there’s a lot of subtext to unpack.

Plenty has been said abt TFA’s disrespect for career teachers (”Step aside, Grandma and let me show you how we smart Ivy Leaguers get the job done”) & the absurd condescension of insisting a top college kid can pretty much master the work in 5-wk training curmudgucation.substack.com/p/teach-for-...

I would edit: It incentivizes taxpayer to donate to scholarship organizations, which them provide funds to WHOMEVER THEY DECIDE. There are no giving criteria, need-based or otherwise. & it's not "parental choice." The entity exercising choice over use of public funds here is the org, not the family.

Relatively early on in the ChatGPT era Grammarly reached out to me to talk because they thought someone like me might "approve" of what they were doing in terms of support, not replacement. They've apparently entirely pivoted to substitution of student effort as their business model. Gross.

Over 20% of Arizona ESA purchases were 'unallowable,' audit finds An audit revealed over 20% of Arizona ESA purchases may be unallowed, including video games, gift cards and condoms.

I'm thrilled to see unallowable purchases called out, but the real scandal is what is allowed & the absence of oversight to ensure kids are being educated.

Public money=public accountability. Require every ESA kid be tested on core academic subjects every year, and publicly report results
