Black Library do such lovely work with these limited edition hardcovers and it’s really exciting to see my first in the wild. Abraxia: Spear of the Everchosen is up for preorder next Saturday!

It was quite common back in the day for Forge World painters who weren't on the 'Eavy Metal team to use those paints, but these days it's nearly all Citadel - but the Archive does suggest a few alternatives that might be useful in terms of consistency/quality.

I think it's a very interesting topic and I would also love to see a wider array of recipes more easily accessible.

I think with the EM team being much bigger now (but still incredibly busy) it's a bit different to the days of Mike McVey or Darren L and Tom W listing off recipes.

It is helpful for that yep, but I think they can be as restrictive as the can be helpful if all you take away is a list of paints. You’re an artistic guy who’s done lots of fantasist stuff outside of miniature painting so I imagine you sidestep that a little!

A colour, glazed down twice, highlighted up a few times - perhaps with some glazing - with mixed that desaturate/warm/cool the final tone for colour theory reasons, and rendered to match the materiel. Simply following the steps without the theory is skipping a lot…

Also as someone who spends a lot of time hanging out in the Infernal Brush discord a common thread is people asking for recipes before trying their own or applying a recipe from another mini - it’s a bit like cooking in that for the pro chefs they’re guidelines based on principles…

Using wholesale other brands here and there a lot would probably cause issues with finish and if you’ve seen EM stuff in person they always have a remarkably consistent finish despite rarely being varnished (for photography reasons)

Having spoken to the team many times, they’re mixing lots of Citadel - stuff like the deepkin flesh and death guard green paints were based on mixes they developed in-house for those ranges, for example.

Infernal Brush used Citadel, but sometimes with his own preferences mixed in here and there.

I imagine it’s largely down to time. Interviews, articles and videos that cover this stuff adequately take a long time, for a small audience, but they’re clearly getting more popular so maybe it will be expanded upon one day.

The YouTube channel is just aimed at a lower level, because most people don’t want to do the endless mixing and glazing required, and EM recipes only get you so far unless you can replicate the brush control and principals behind them. Which is what CCM is for on WH+.
