MOVING TO FRONT FROM MAY 29

“As I've done in recent years, I will reduce blogging substantially during June and July and to a lesser extent in August as well…”

Text imposed over a photo of Carrie Bradshaw and Samantha Jones chatting:

“Hey is everything okay” - Samantha
“No, I forgot to announce my summer quasi-hiatus” - Carrie

David Birnbaum and legal threats-
In eleven years of blogging, I've only once received a serious threat of legal action for something posted here--serious, not in the sense that the claim had any merit, but in that the person making the claim had a real lawyer and there was a real prospect of a nuisance lawsuit being filed.  The case involved jeweler and self-styled metaphysician David Birnbaum…

But that whole affair made me wonder:  why so few legal threats over the years, given the high visbility of this blog?

Is the tide finally turning on the New Infantilists and "thought police" in academic philosophy?
I get an increasing number of messages like the following (in this case from a recently tenured philosopher), which are a hopeful sign I think: …

So I keep coming back to the same question:

Harvey Lederman (logic, epistemology, philosophy of language, Chinese philosophy), Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, has accepted a senior offer from the Department of Philosophy at New York University, where he will start in 2026-27. That's a big catch for NYU, and a big loss for Texas (which will very likely drop out of the top ten in the U.S., but will, I expect, remain in the top 15).

“More evidence for the relativity of moral judgments, this time in the form of cross-cultural responses to variations on the Trolley Problem

Of course, moral realists will have their usual question-begging accounts that explain away these divergent responses, but putting the parochialism of Anglophone moral philosophers to one side…”

Of course, moral realists will have their usual question-begging accounts that explain away these divergent responses…. So is it even possible to put the parochialism of Anglophone moral philosophers to one side? Or are we doomed to forever ignore cross-cultural responses to variations on the Trolley Problem?
