And then there’s the conversation topic will he or won’t he, who will it be, et cetera, et cetera.

Kujo Kiriya had shown interest in a good amount of people here and there, his smooth talking was familiar to many people but he only brought his charms so far. Sometimes it’d be playful banter between friends, colleagues who were a little distant may have found it a little overbearing or annoying, but there were also some that expected something beyond just buttery words.

Oftentimes there’d end up being nothing more than just sweet exchanges over dinner.

“This was nice,” he’d say after paying the bill, “Let’s do this again sometime, yeah?” It didn’t matter how smooth the skin of your hand was, or the color of the lipstick you’d wear – he’d never take you home.
Sure, maybe if you’re lucky you’d get a ride back to your place, maybe a bonus if he’d kiss you after walking you to your door, but he always leaves right after.

	“Call me,” you say.
	“I will,” he responds.

Kujo Kiriya isn't known for his honesty. He never calls you, and you don't think it's a good idea to call him.

He had made an interesting reputation for himself. He's not exactly unkind nor irresponsible, he just seems terrible at interpersonal relationships.
“Seriously, you're 28, and you're still single?” A colleague asks.
“Is that a bad thing?” He shrugs it off, finding the autopsy report in his hand more interesting.

Friends from school, colleagues from work – one by one they're announcing their engagements or even marriages, some already even have kids.
“Any plans at least?” The question gives him pause.

Plans? What plans? He's practically a dead man walking. He threw everything away at one point just to save something even he wouldn't dare to say out loud.

“I'm just going with the flow,” an expert facade, always sporting that ‘cool guy’ attitude, “Don't worry about me, seriously.”
He begins talking about his colleague instead, keeping the topic of his personal life in the dark once again. Well, what's there to know anyway.

Kujo Kiriya slept soundly in his bed surrounded by a soft glow, sunlight filtering through the blinds stirring him from his sleep – it’s another day.

Yawn~

Good morning, he thought to himself, dragging himself out from under the covers, the cold air of his bedroom hit him – he’d shiver, but relief would wash over him as the morning light bathed him in a gentle warmth.

His footsteps were gentle against the wooden floor that transitioned into marble tile as he made his way into the bathroom, light grey tiles that lined the walls greeted him.

He’d see familiar tired eyes and messy hair in the mirror, the weight of his drowsiness weighed heavy on his shoulders.

A rinse should probably fix this, he thought as he turned the faucet, the sound of water running filled the empty room.

His drowsiness would be washed away after the cold water hit his face. Phew, he breathed, reaching for his toothbrush. He’d been using it for about four months now, maybe it’s time for a change…

Ah, the bristles don’t look too frayed. I’m sure I can still use it for a little while longer.

He doesn’t think much of it, brushing his teeth clean, getting that stale taste of the morning out of his mouth.

The rest of his mornings were quick and efficient after he got into the groove of things – coffee and a quick breakfast, a quick shower, then it’s out the door and back to another day of work.

The paperwork won’t do itself, after all

Kujo Kiriya was more or less used to the sympathy given to him by others who knew about the incident that transpired years ago, especially when the month of December would roll around.

“We should be more careful on the topic of planning for Christmas, right?”

“Would he even enjoy himself at the party?”

“We should play it safe, just in case. We don’t know how he deals with his trauma.”

Conversations he’d hear in the upstairs meeting room while he sits at the bottom of the stairs.

They’re skirting around this way too much. He scoffs to himself, wondering, Are they doing all this for my comfort or for their own?

In truth, Kujo Kiriya had a lot of time to think about it. The memory of rain showering down on his face as he gasped for air, trying desperately to cling onto his life – so close to blowing that case wide open.

Ah, well. What happened already happened, no use in dwelling on it.

Christmas was always a hard topic anyway. Most people figured Kiriya was the one who’d have it harder, but he’s learned to cope with it – though, people would get uncomfortable whenever he’d joke about it. Emu especially.

Poor kid.

He felt bad, honestly. It was him who’d died that day, but Emu? He watched his friend die in front of his eyes. Crazy stuff.

Guess it makes sense for him to have been shaken up like that, but it wasn’t his fault.

Ah, well. Gotta figure out gift ideas for the time being.
