Americans want to watch charismatic people solve moderately difficult problems on a weekly basis. That’s it. And a group of fomo execs and techbros who don’t watch TV drove one of the most profitable industries in the US off a cliff rather than accept that.

"there are no atheists in foxholes" is a terrible expression. sure, the things that foxes worship do not resemble our "gods". that does not mean that they are atheists

I think we should establish an understanding in the United States that if you order the military to carry out a lethal strike against something that is not an imminent threat without congressional authorization, what you did was murder and the entire chain of command is guilty.

more fiction should have explicit sex scenes that aren't important to the plot actually

If you think about it: the fact that Buzz Lightyear wakes up believing he’s on a space mission to save the planet and help everyone, only to learn that he’s a toy, and all his memories are a lie, kinda makes Toy Story a horror movie.

jokes about the confederacy are always funny, but you gotta think about it in terms of "Supernatural lasted 5x longer than the Confederacy", which is absolutely hysterical

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

to my mind the woman who dies of sepsis because of antiabortion laws, or the person who dies because they can't afford insulin -- these are just as much victims of political violence as the man shot through the throat while making a racist speech

It is weird that the assassination of essentially a celebrity influencer is a bigger deal than the shooting of two top state legislators + their spouses

The orgy of liberal pundits tripping over each other to praise Charlie Kirkβ€”when he caused so much violence to the lives of Black and LGBTQ people (including me specifically)β€”is telling about why the Dems can’t build an antifascist coalition.

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

Humans crave meaningful work. Crushing our lives under things we "have to do" is a bad way to live obviously. But I believe meaningful work is one of our great needs in life & corporate tools have abused and reshaped that brilliant drive to an unrecognizable place by viewing it as a resource to tap.

again, "republicans are invasive freaks" was working for a minute, along with taking on the rich, etc there's a literal avalanche of fascism to talk about on top of all this. that INCLUDES refuting their anti trans bullshit instead of saying they have a point or there are "concerns". reject it all

Thought I’d start this at the end of May (received ARC from netgalley) and finish it for Pride month but I ended up devouring it in 2 days. The voice makes this story so special! Doris is a hoot and I want to hang out with all these dynamic characters for a weekend. In my top 3 of the year so far.

Love this from Pedro Pascal at Cannes:

"Fear is the way that they win, so keep telling the stories and expressing yourself and fighting. F*ck the people that try to make you scared and fight back. Don’t let them win"
