If I'm honest, finding it difficult to meet the present moment. Too close to the destruction & emotionally exhausted by insider knowledge of impacts. Hopefully acknowledging the big feels & espresso will bring renewed energy & value based action. Have an uncomfortable day & do it anyways, y'all.

Attended the Union of Concerned Scientist's webinar about protecting scientists engaged in advocacy and I think the most important message was: The more people who do it, the safer we all are.

See the list of resources they shared below. Carry your weight and let others carry you!

Why It’s Important to Talk about Race with Children Children start learning about race and racism as early as preschool. Talking about race early, however difficult, will help them become more antiracist

"White parents who see themselves as egalitarian must recognize that the stakes are now higher than ever. If you want to raise children who reject racism rather than passively absorbing it, right now, today, talk with your child about race and racism."

Chad A twisted on bonus for great inservice teachers v supply side. Natl shortage of special educators makes this moot. We have classrooms ran by non licensed teachers! Teachers need training to be effective. And, most of our workforce is white women but maybe that isn't something Chad cares about.

Friends in higher ed: As legal (and allegedly legal) pressures increase, you might want to pay close attention to who at your institution is telling you what "the law" is.

In particular: Are they an attorney?

America Wasn’t a Democracy, Until Black Americans Made It One (Gift Article) Our founding ideals of liberty and equality were false when they were written. For generations, black Americans have fought to make them true.

Black Americans truly brought democracy to America.

Remember this during Black History Month.

Dog head

Waking before the birds means coffee with my very good boi. In middle age, he likes to be covered with a fuzzy blankie in bed so I ordered him a ridiculous, hands knit wool sweater this morning. I don't know who is knitting these dog sweaters built for 80 + lb dogs, but I thank you.

Effective February 10:

NIH Federal Advisory Committee meeting notices to the Office of the Federal Registare are now on hold. This affects NIH's ability to move forward with National Advisory Council/Board meetings that were previously noticed as having open and closed sessions and with Scientific Review Group (study sections and Special Emphasis Panels) meetings and Boards of Scientific Counselors that had not yet been noticed with a Federal Register Notice. As such, NIH will cancel those meetings on a day-by-day basis until additional guidance is received. Scientific Review Group meetings and Boards of Scientific Counselors that were previously noticed are moving forward.

Internal NIH guidance updated yesterday. Just canceling stuff each day from here on out I guess, pending new guidance. Killing science off both slowly and incredibly rapidly.
