How scientists are confronting the lingering imprint of colonialism Science series to spotlight efforts to reduce parachute science, empower Global South countries

Please Repost! We are in an era of huge gains in technology, discovery and data "sequestration". We need to be honest about what's happening and the terrible outcomes that could happen if we continue the 533 years of colonial extraction. www.science.org/content/arti...

Some of you may recall this post. I thought I'd provide an update on how planning for my analog course is going...

It's been a mix of expected and unexpected, but welcome, surprises --

Text layered over a photo of the Mississippi River as viewed from the Lake Street-Marshall Ave bridge of downtown Minneapolis. The left bank from the camera's view is Minneapolis and the right bank is St. Paul. Text reads:

Riverside (11.22.25)

Two Saint Paul city blocks from the Mississippi, I write in low-sky sun, late autumn, late afternoon. The trees have dropped their colourful wraps. They pose bare, brown, and bony. Soon theyโ€™ll be svelte and sparkle in tight coats of winter frost. In my auntโ€™s basement I write, and laugh every time I tell someone hereโ€™s where I live now. We eat her good cooking in the evenings, last night was bison and roots, creamy potatoes, candles in a tableside window. The Canadians think it is safer up there. My ancestors also came home in a year of graver danger.

Owรกmniyomni Okhรณdayapi just announced the Dakota-led design for the restoration of five acres at Owรกmniyomni (St. Anthony Falls), adjacent to the Upper Lock on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Project construction is targeted to begin in spring 2026. Very exciting!

If you ask historians of medicine what keeps them up at night, many will not say a new plague or bioterrorism, they will answer, "antibiotic resistance."

Reframe 1 and 2 (11.16.25)

The second hardest thing was returning to the settlersโ€™ โ€œAmerica.โ€ But these waters and lands, beings that breathe here, exceed millions of Europeansโ€™ re-namingsโ€”their straight marks and crooked justifications. The return is to an ancient terrain, to skies our ancestors studied, drew lines from to the Earth.

The first hardest thing was leaving a โ€œmarriage.โ€ But an ecology of intimacies exceeds, defies centuries of settler mappings of a manโ€™s flesh-blood territory as โ€œhusband,โ€ and a womanโ€™s as โ€œwife.โ€ The turn was to a way of living together, sometimes, our child in the centre. A place the settlers donโ€™t name.

I have a weekly writing-friend circle. Each of us takes a day of the week and we write in a loop. My menopause mind has trouble remembering on time. My day is Saturday. I remembered to write this morning.

What is fascinating about the AI bubble is that there is at its core a quasi-spiritual element. There are people working at these labs that believe they are building God; that is how they justify the massive investment in leading edge models that never have the chance to earn back their costs before they are superceded by someone else. Thatโ€™s why they push for policies that I think are bad for innovation and bad for national security. I donโ€™t like these side effects, to be clear, but I appreciate the importance of the belief and the motivation.

This paragraph from Ben Thompson's Stratechery column today is simply *chef's kiss*. Sure, AI is being pursued by cult members in economically irrational ways that stifle the public interest, but gotta admire their chutzpah!
