Today, I learned that my history of pain theories paper has hit 1000 citations. This was a genuine labour of love - and I'm so delighted (and grateful) to see that so many people read it, and then cited it!

I know 1000 isn't a lot for many on here, but I am very proud of this achievement.

I am thrilled to share people with lived experience have been integrated into all parts of the study. #PainRelatedSuffering

Our study of people’s worst pain episodes has just been published and is Open Access. The findings are incredibly sad and support the expansion of traditional understandings of suffering. @virginiamci.bsky.social @keithmeldrum.bsky.social @gabriellepage.bsky.social www.jpain.org/article/S152...

Our definition is still in the works as others noted. So far, we have published some pieces to build a foundation for an evidence-based definition, including this initial paper: www.jpain.org/article/S152...

@peterstilwell.bsky.social argues that qualitative methods are needed to really understand how pain and suffering affects the person. He uses phenomenological approaches to explore the question.

"[B]y framing the question in terms of β€œbody vs. mind” or β€œphysical vs. psychological” we risk falling into a misleading dualism. [...] Pain... challenges us to think beyond the body vs. mind and physical vs. psychological, showing instead how deeply intertwined these realms are."

Interesting!

It has been great writing this piece with @peterstilwell.bsky.social about the mind-body divide and why it is often misleading to speak of 'physical' vs. 'psychological' pain.
