I'm following you now from Alabama's Blackbelt, downhill from the southern edge of Appalachia

We live and eat and die on its surface. If we are doing it right, adding to the blackness of the soil around us, giving life to new creatures growing from our remains

The soil on top of and made from those bones is rich black with the remains of the most recent creatures, adding up over thousands of years, making the soil black with their composted remains, so we call it the Blackbelt

This is a simple representation of a scene at a cuesta on the Alabama Blackbelt Prairie. These prairies have been the stage for so much life and death, and are built on the accumulated bones of billions of creatures that lived on this spot for millions of years, reaching back 70 million years

I'm following you now. I'm on a whole different scale from you, being self-taught, painting simple metaphors in acrylic in my "spare time." We all do need each other

I am working on the same state and though I have no conclusive thing to say, I do believe that death and life are not two binary states, but more like points on a circle, and we can find ourselves somewhere in between, like how you feel. I paint about it, but am much more indirect
